Questions to ask before you buy:

Weight - Are you concerned about the weight of the nail gun? Some builders look for the lightest framing nailer because they can work longer with less arm fatigue. That's the benefit of a light-weight nailer. Other framers don't really mind the extra 1 or so pounds. I have personally used guns as heavy as 9 pounds and as light as 7 pounds and can work just about as fast with either one.

Size - Size is also an important factor to some contractors and DIYers. A more compact sized framing nail gun can fit into tighter spaces to shoot the nails in the right spot. Some framing nailers can fit between studs and joists as narrow as 12 inches. Others are more bulky and you'll have a hard time with tight areas.

Power - Pneumatic framing nailers range quite a bit in the power to drive nails. Some nail guns can shoot nails up to 3-1/4 inches long. Others can easily drive the larger 3-1/2 inch nails. Many framers don't need to shoot nails any larger than 3-1/4 inches long. Others, on the other hand, prefer to have the extra power to drive larger nails when the need arises.

Features - What feature do you need in a nail gun? The modern guns have a vast array of features available. Some have selective triggers, where you can switch between contact nailing and sequential actuation nailing with the push of a button. The Solar Lights Experience Part 3 - Indoor Solar Skylights!

In my last articles I outlined my fist experience with outdoor solar path lights and how I went on to add some accent lighting and solar spot lights. Well, it turns out that I was so happy with those projects that I decided to see what else was offered in the way of solar lighting.

First of all, I need to tell you that I am a big fan of do-it-yourself projects. I come from a construction background and I am friends with most tools. Needless to say, I am always looking for ways to make my home better. Since I had just finished with all of my outdoor solar projects, I was looking for other projects along those lines. When I say that the project I found was a lot easier than I expected, it is not only because of my background. It really was easy. After doing some research, I ordered a solar skylight.

I stumbled upon a link for solar skylights and I thought it looked kind of cool, but maybe a little pricey. It also looked like the kind of project that would be a bit of a challenge. Turns out that I was wrong on both accounts. After shopping around, I bought a very nice solar kit for a little over 0. Yep, 0!! It came with everything I needed, including templates (for cutting the holes). The manufacturer said that installation should take about 2-3 hours. They were actually wrong there. This is how the whole thing went:

When I got the package, I made sure that all the parts were there and that the flashing was correct for my roof. The flashing is important. It comes in flat and sloped roof varieties. It also came with templates for the roof cutout and the ceiling hole as well. The "light fixture" itself actually looked like a regular light fixture. You couldn't really tell that it was solar by looking at it.

The location I chose was the hall bathroom. This location was perfect because that bathroom had no exhaust fan and the existing lights were mounted on the wall above the mirror as opposed to the ceiling, which meant I could still use them. I picked a spot where I wanted the fixture to be and drove a nail through the ceiling sheet rock. I put some tape on the nail so it wouldn't fall and went into the attic crawl space. I pulled the insulation and found my nail. I used a makeshift plumb-bob to line my nail up with a spot on the underside of the roof and drove another nail up though the roof. Now, according to the instructions, the dome and fixture do not have to be exactly lined up, but the better they line up, the more light you get.

Next, I went up on the roof and found my nail. I removed some roof tiles and used the template to cut my hole in the roof with a jigsaw. I then set the dome, diffuser, and flashing in place. I went back into the attic and cut my hole in the ceiling for the fixture. From that point, I just needed to go back into the bathroom and mount the fixture, go back into the attic to attach the tubing from the dome assembly to the fixture, and screw in the dome flashing. I also decided to use some aluminum tape around the tube joints. Total installation time - 1 hour, 40 minutes! Now, my attic access is really close to that bathroom, so that helped reduce the installation time. I also used an orbital jig saw (Porter Cable) and an impact screw gun. Your results may vary.

So, the solar skylight is done, but how does it work? It works awesomely! Even on overcast days, it gives off a ton of light. In fact, that bathroom is brighter during the day than it used to be with the lights on! I want to put another one in the other bathroom to replace the light/fan that I have in there. I will need to put lights above the mirror though for night time.

The 6 Gallon Air Compressor - Excellent For Home Use

When it comes to home use air compressors, many of the models available are too small and too weak to be used for many more intense applications. For example, a lot of small household air compressors simply do not generate enough psi (pounds per square inch of pressure) or cfm (cubic feet per minute of air flow) to power larger pneumatic (air driven) tools like nail guns, large paint sprayers, or saws and grinders. For these kinds of applications, a more powerful compressor is required though you probably do not need a full industrial air compressor. This is where the 6 gallon air compressor may be the best bet.

The "6 gallon" in 6 gallon air compressor refers to the size of the storage tank built into the compressor. The storage tanks plays a number of important roles, not least of which is regulating the amount of pressure you are generating and using to prevent accidental overloads. The tank allows the motor to stop compressing air once the tank is full to capacity, allowing it to rest and improving the machine's longevity. The tanks also guarantee an even output of air, despite fluctuations stemming from the motor; that is, the flow of air out of a compressor with a tanks is always steady and stable, unlike tankless compressors.

Although the 6 gallon air compressor comes in many different varieties, most are fairly small and easily portable, usually weighing somewhere between thirty to fifty pounds. These are not compressors meant for the truck on your car or to be taken out on the trail, but are excellent for people using a number of pneumatic tools around their home or in small work areas. They are portable, but not too portable. Further, the 6 gallon compressor is almost always designed to be used around the home and as such is driven by an electrical motor, typically using about 120 volts.

In general the 6 gallon air compressor also does not use oil, which makes them a bit louder, much easier to maintain and operate around the home. Adding in oil includes adding an oil recycling system, and air/oil separator unit, and a myriad of other features, which would more or less defeat the purpose of a small, easy to use home air compressor. Since portability is a key factor, one will frequently find either a flat "pancake" shapped tank or a vertical one as opposed to more awkward horizontal tanks connected to a 6 gallon compressor.

The 6 gallon air compressor is more or less the top end of the small compressors built for home use. Most generate at least 100 psi and enough cfm to run most household tools or even a few smaller tools simultaneously. Most of the better models in fact generate 150 psi, but this might be a waste of energy if you do not really need that much pressure in the tank(s). In general, one can expect to pay somewhere between 0 and 0 for a good quality 6 gallon compressor, though this price may come down as more and more of these small compressors enter the market.
